  • Was you New Year Resolution to improve your physical fitness but you are having some continence issues?

It doesn’t have to be this way! Specialist pelvic floor physiotherapists are helping people resolve their continence problems with pelvic floor exercises, personalised advice and exercise programmes

20-25% of women are affected by urinary continence issues. Stress incontinence can be caused by weakening of the pelvic floor muscles and connective tissue as well as damage to nerves during pregnancy or birth. Continence problems can also become more prevalent during the menopause. Declining ovarian function results in oestrogen depletion which can lead to the urethra, bladder  and supportive ligaments giving less support which can lead to increased frequency and urgency and ultimately to leakage of urine.

Continence issues can be distressing and socially disruptive, severely affecting quality of life and self esteem. Many people choose not to discuss their problems due to embarrassment or simply because they believe it to be normal after child birth or just an inevitable part of ageing.

Pelvic floor muscles have many functions- they support the pelvis and low back, help prevent prolapse and support the bladder and bowel to prevent incontinence. Pelvic floor muscle reeducation is a low risk and effective intervention that can really help and should be considered before other interventions. Regular exercise can resolve symptoms within months and continence physiotherapy allows you to be taught what to do and how to to succeed.
