Chiropody & Podiatry

Podiatry at the Physio Therapy Centre

Offering treatment to all age groups, from babies and children through adults and the elderly, and specialising in all foot problems relating to activities:- running sports, hiking and walking.

Treatment includes a biomechanical assessment, where the joint range of motion will be measured and gait pattern studied. If necessary a foot cast is taken and sent to an orthotic laboratory along with the prescription form. It takes about three weeks for the orthoses to be made. Patients are also given an exercise programme, if necessary.

Among other treatments offered are effective relief from:

In-growing toenails.

These are easily treated while recurrent in-growing nails may benefit from minor surgery. This is carried out under a local anaesthetic and the recovery period is usually between four and eight weeks.

Fungal infections

Many types of fungi can infect the feet. A specimen of the affected skin or nail is for analysis by a pathology laboratory before advice is given on the most appropriate course of treatment.

Verrucae

Also known as plantar warts. These are caused by a virus and can be difficult to treat. However, there are effective treatments available including homeopathic, herbal and chemical.

Corns and callous

These form on the feet as a protective mechanism, but excessive callous can be painful. Corns form over and under an area of pressure and friction. They are a generally a symptom of walking problems although can be caused by ill- fitting shoes.
